As Wigan made a remarkable comeback from 26 – 0 to lift the league leaders title the debate over Bradford continued. With a new owner on the cards for the beleaguered Superleague debate on the BBC GMR coverage of the Wigan – Hull KR centred on what will happen next year.

Officially there will be a round of mini licensing that Bradford will have to be entered into in order to try to keep their Superleague licenese.

However there have been calls from broadcasters and chairman use the opportunity to reduce the number of Superleague clubs to 12.

Chairman such as St Helens’ Eamon Mcmanus have said that because 3 clubs have entered administration it is proof that there are too many teams. This does not make economic sense. Regardless of whether there are 10, 12, 14 or more teams in Superleague each club have the same outgoings. That is there is still the squad to pay, stadium running costs and travel costs.

The argument to reduce the number clubs is that there is more games between and against the bigger attended teams and so increase revenues. Bradford however have an average attendance larger than most of Superleague and a stadium capacity higher than most. Therefore all teams would suffer on gate receipts. It also means that travel costs rise as there are more trips to London and Perpignan.

You could of course get rid of smaller attended sides but that means that despite Bradford breaking many rules they are reprieved. The most likely outcome is that Bradford will enter licensing potentially against some championship sides. However with a very short time for those sides to secure bigger funding before next season the likes of Featherstone Rovers, Halifax and Leigh Centurians may be cautious. Therefore it seems inevitable that the mini-licensing process will be entered into by only Bradford and will result in a Superleague License for the next 2 seasons.
